“I didn’t join Grant Thornton in the most conventional way. I’d been working for another firm, but I didn’t see my future there. Of course, with Jersey being a small island, word of the best employers quickly spreads. I knew Grant Thornton was an expanding firm that helps its people grow.
What I didn’t know was that Grant Thornton was in the process of acquiring my old firm’s book of business – so making the career move I wanted was even easier.
The way things worked out with the acquisition meant I was still working for the same director – the only one I’d ever worked with. With that in mind, I felt in order to broaden my experience further, I should consider working for a new employer. But, upon doing so, I quickly realised I hadn’t needed to move to achieve my career goals.
At the time, I hadn’t realised how great our work environment is, how much help and support I get from the directors, and just how many opportunities come my way.
I’ve never felt like a number here. Grant Thornton always puts its people first (and that’s a message that comes right from the top). It’s led to me having some unforgettable experiences – not least my secondment to support the government in the Falkland Islands. My work involved managing the government’s accounts in their Treasury Department. However, it was the journey to the Islands that made it even more memorable for me. I had to board two military flights where I was the only civilian on board!
What I would like people to take away from my story is that your life and your career is on a permanent learning curve, don’t be afraid to make a few mistakes!
Because of all this and so much more, I’m incredibly proud to say I work at Grant Thornton.”
