Inspiring the next generation

Showing students that anything is possible

Ntokozo is an audit partner at Grant Thornton in Pretoria, South Africa.
Her passion for people and community has led her to take part in charity initiatives every year and, recently, to take on the role of the firm’s head of People and Culture Portfolio. Today, Ntokozo continues to drive development and improvement in the lives and wellbeing of both the firm’s professional team and the local community.

"I believe charity work comes from the heart."

"It should be something that you genuinely want to do – because at the end of the day, life is about everyone around you – the difference we can make in the lives of our communities, our clients, and those around us.

So throughout the year, we support people in our local township through various charity events and bigger, annual events like our Accounting and Educational Expo in September.

Bringing around 300 students from the community together, the Expo supports local learners by teaching them the importance of education and subjects like maths, science and accounting for future success. The aim is to help instil passion in these subjects, because even though they’re often seen as difficult, we want learners to feel like they can do it.

It’s also an opportunity for our firm to share our perspectives with the students and spread the message that life is what you make it – and that with the right mindset, anyone can succeed. Because I, too, grew up in a poor community without many resources and today, I can say that I’m a leader, I’m a partner. And that helps inspire students by showing them that through hard work, anything is possible.

The response, encouragement and the change in thinking that teachers say they see in students after the Expo is amazing. We’ve even had applicants for our traineeship programmes tell us they want to work with us because of the positive change we’re bringing to the community.

And that has made me want to become even more involved in assisting students in their studying – I’d love to be able to mentor students in their course work and subject choice.

Because community involvement isn’t just a once- or twice-a-year event, it’s about trying to make a difference everyday – even if it’s only one person’s life, it has a ripple effect.”
